EU approve Microsoft – Yahoo! search alliance

Europe has completed the discussion about the Internet search partnership between Microsoft Corporation and Yahoo!. The two giant technology companies had already announced an internet search partnership to counter Google's domination of the market.

The agreement between Microsoft and Yahoo! will run for 10 years. This is longer than expected, but it will give them the opportunity to provide advertisers to pay to have their links appear when people search for certain terms. In this way the companies make money.
Anyway, Microsoft and Yahoo! together have a share of 11 per cent of the internet search market over the whole world. That is well behind Google’s 65 per cent. (In Europe is this less than 10 per cent facing Google’s more that 90 per cent).

On the other hand, Microsoft has a better chance to reach web users because of the cooperation with Yahoo!. It will allow Microsoft to introduce ‘Bing’ (its search machine) to more people. Many web users had been using Google by force of habit, they said. But from my point of view is the internet search of Google the most user-friendly. The difference between the both internet searches engines are for example the suggestions that Google offers you when you type a keyword of your subject. Another advantage of Google is that Google helps you to find the correct information even you hadn’t spell the keywords correctly (for example, Google corrects ‘hotmeel’ in ‘hotmail’).

It is important that Microsoft and Yahoo! invest in research and development of their own innovative search engine. Certainly it will be a challenge for them to gain more users and to counter Google’s leader position!
